“Femme Fatale” – The Rhonda’s Revenge Houndstooth 50’s Pencil Dress by British Retro

The Rhonda’s Revenge Houndstooth 50’s Pencil Dress is my first dress from British Retro. When they popped up in my ‘sponsored’ ads on Facebook, Facebook clearly knew what they were doing. Just like Lady V London, I fell in love with pretty much every item on British Retro’s website. I saved the link to this dress and planned to buy it on my next payday.

And I did just that!

At the time of buying this dress, I was in between sizes, so wasn’t sure whether to order a UK size 10 or 12, but opted for the 12 as that way it could always be taken in if it was too big. Well, it did need taking in (quite a bit actually) and, even though I bought this dress back in July, the alterations were only finished a month or so ago, so I’ve only just had the chance to take some photos and get a review up now.

I was drawn to this dress for a few reasons. Firstly, I love dogstooth/houndstooth as a print. Secondly, the cut and fit is so sexy, glamorous and flattering. It feels very femme fatale. The model on the site also did a great job of making it look awesome.

Taken from British Retro’s website:

We are a proud British made brand specialising in bringing our customers elegant, vintage style clothing from the good old days. Born a couple of years ago, we are now causing a mini British invasion to wardrobes worldwide with our vintage dresses.

Our garments are created in one of the oldest established factories in the East End of London and all our fabrics & trimmings are sourced from all around these fine shores too, as we truly have a passion for utilising local industry.

At affordable prices and beautifully made, our gorgeous vintage style clothing will transport you back to a time of elegance and finesse with a touch of naughty, Pin Up cheekiness.

This dress cost me £55.00 at full price, with a few pounds in postage on top, but I can see it has since gone up to £58.00. In my opinion, it’s very much worth it.

The dress is made from  97% cotton and 3% spandex, meaning it has a little stretch so you can walk freely in it, but is a tight and figure-hugging fit. Overall, I find it comfortable to wear and I don’t have to readjust it too often. It feels lovely to wear – glamorous, luxurious and very fancy. The perfect dress for cocktails with the girls or a date. It dries fairly quickly on an indoor drying rack and requires a light iron so isn’t too high maintenance. Bonus points!

The sleeves sit off -the-shoulder and as you can see, the dress naturally nips in at the waist. I chose to add a slim waist belt to emphasis this, although it still looks great without. It depends on your own taste, really. I have a habit of adding waist belts to everything!

The dress also has a sweetheart neckline on the front and a V neck back, which I felt looked best with hair flowing instead of tied up.

As you can see from the photos, I wore matching dogstooth heels from New Look, some long, white evening gloves, and a cute little neck-scarf from Accessorize, too. I wanted to emphasise the glamorous look of the dress and felt these were the perfect accessories to do so.

I kept makeup to black winged eyeliner and red lipstick, and opted for my glasses over contact lenses today. I think sunglasses would make the dress look extra sophisticated. I have received SO many compliments on this dress and can’t rate it highly enough for that va-va-voom sex appeal and glamour.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, I ordered a size too big, so would say that British Retro appear to be true to size, but I would suggest using their online calculator or to give them a quick message to check if you’re unsure on anything. It’s a tight-fitting dress so you want to make sure you get the right fit! My dress arrived after just a few days of ordering it and I had no issues whatsoever with the process start to finish. I would definitely consider ordering from British Retro again, and already have my eye on a few other pieces.

Later on, I also styled the dress with a pink stole I found in a vintage shop.

This style dress comes in various other prints and they have many other similar dresses and even halternecks which are equally as gorgeous.

British Retro cover UK sizes 8-18 and have been established for a couple of years. Their following on social media is large and they’re quickly becoming established as a leading vintage reproduction dress company.
